2003 Business Development Professional of the Year

Tim McCoy
Business Development Manager
Texans Credit Union
Richardson, TX

It’s been said prosperity forges friendships and adversity tests them. Likewise, tough financial times test credit union executives’ mettle. Tim McCoy, business development manager for Texans Credit Union, Richardson, Texas, has shown he has the wherewithal not only to withstand tough times, but to succeed despite them. That’s one trait that earned him 2003 Business Development Professional of the Year honors from the CUNA Marketing Council.

“Overall, it was the quality and breadth of Tim’s business development efforts that made him stand out,” notes Kristine Kowalski of Kane County Teachers Credit Union in Elgin, Ill., the lead judge in this category. “It wows you.”

“I can’t say we had a banner year,” McCoy relates. “We’re right in the middle of the telecom corridor, and all of the telecom companies and other industries in this area were hit hard by the last economic downturn. We’ve seen a lot of layoffs. Companies are battening down the hatches and trying to ride out the storm. That makes it extremely difficult to find prospective select employee groups [SEGs].

“But even though we had some budget cuts and had to reduce our participation in a number of things,” he continues, “we still were able to accomplish all of our major objectives. Those included meeting our return on assets goal, staying in budget, promoting Texans Credit Union, and participating in company events, open enrollments, bene.ts fairs, and those types of things.”

As one business development avenue, SEGs, closed, McCoy turned to another: the community. “It was nice to have the community side to turn to and to participate
in community events,” he says. “It was a fallback position to the downturn in SEGs. We’ve been taking part in chamber of commerce lunches and dinners, and in community events where we can get some name recognition and promote our image.”
