Brett Noll, vice president and chief marketing officer for Langley Federal Credit Union, Hampton, Va., finds the best way to achieve marketing success is with
the TEAM approach: Together Everyone Achieves More.

This approach recognizes that marketing doesn’t exist in a vacuum—it can’t achieve the credit union’s objectives without other departments’ cooperation and
support. Marketing’s role is to propose and implement new initiatives, support successful programs, and devise new strategies to help the credit union meet its objectives.

“I’ve always felt marketing is the fuel that makes the machine we call a credit union run,” Noll says. “It takes much more than fuel to keep a machine running. If I could have fit all of Langley Federal Credit Union employees on the cover of the award entry, that would have been an appropriate compliment to their support of our marketing efforts.”

Noll says “Team Langley” views charitable efforts and community support as a daily responsibility—and it shows. In 2002, under Noll’s supervision, Langley Federal won numerous awards, including a CUNA Bridge Award and first and second place awards in the Virginia Credit Union League’s Maximum Marketing Award competition.

Some of Noll’s other 2002 accomplishments:

  • Improving relationships with Langley Air Force Base by establishing an advisory board to identify how the credit union could better serve base personnel and their families.
  • Establishing a retail rewards program in which local merchants offer substantial discounts on products and services to Langley members.
  • Improving electronic services delivery advertisements so members make this their communication source of choice. As a result, hits on Langley Federal’s Web site average 4,000 to 5,000 per day.

Overall, marketing efforts in 2002 have increased Langley Federal’s primary financial institution members from 49% to 58%.
