Challenges and Advice for Managing A Multi-Generational Workforce Provided in New Council White Paper

The unique challenges and possible solutions for managing four separate generational groups at credit unions is the subject of a new white paper from the CUNA Human Resources, Training, and Development (HR/TD) Council.

For the first time in America’s history, four distinct generational groups are co-existing in the workplace: The Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. “Getting Along: Managing the Multi-Generational Workforce” discusses the impact that this phenomenon has on the workplace, and the factors that credit unions may want to consider if they are looking to recruit and retain the next generation of workers and leaders amid a tight labor market.

The paper begins by defining the different generations, their demographics, and their knowledge base. It then provides tips for addressing generational challenges for training, incentives, referrals, recruiting/retention, retirement, mentoring, updating policies, and developing leaders. Various “tales from the front line” illustrate the types of challenges that can arise and create a gap between the expectations of the employer and employee. Each story also includes a lesson to be learned in that particular situation.

CUNA Council members are entitled to complimentary copies of these white papers; non-members may purchase the white papers for a price of $50 per copy.

The paper is available online in the white paper section of each council site under the "HR/TD" tab.
