The CUNA Washington office is a direct link to issues most important to how we function as credit unions, such as regulation, for example. DC is also monitoring trends that are important to credit union members as well.

Last Month, Anne and Rich were in Washington D.C. representing CMBDC at the CUNA Council Forum meeting. The Forum, composed of the chairs and vice chairs of all six councils, sets the direction and priorities for the six CUNA Councils.

During the meeting, Anne and Rich (along with Council Forum members and Council staff) were briefed by the CUNA Washington legislative and regulatory staff before meeting with NCUA Board Member Gigi Hyland. It was an exciting week inside the Beltway as the House passed the Bailout bill. During the two days of meetings it became apparent that the administration and the media were not getting the message out about the $250,000 NCUA insurance coverage on credit union accounts.

Increased FDIC coverage dominated the media to the detriment of credit unions which had the same coverage but were not mentioned. CUNA Staff got the message to the Administration and the President included credit unions in his message from the Rose Garden. The NCUA placed ads in USA today, and CUNA staff saw to it that the financial trade press got the message. Anne and Rich worked with staff to get information out to Council members on how to get the increased insurance coverage out to members and the media.
