Member Spotlight: Mike Dilworth
Mike Dilworth is director of marketing and business development for Freedom Federal Credit Union in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Mike has lived his entire life in Harford County. “When I graduated from Towson University, I honestly thought I was going into journalism, having majored in mass communications,” he recalls. “My first few jobs were in business forms advertising and sales promotion.” Since then Mike has made a career in financial services marketing with four credit unions, including his current position with Freedom Federal Credit Union. Mike is married with four children. Biggest challenge Getting through the year and the federal insurance assessment. Best advice Enjoy what you do every day. Take time to have fun. Greatest benefit of Council membership Reading the many worthwhile pieces of advice and white papers; attend the annual conferences. Best part of my job Variety—doing different things every day, being creative. Hardest part of my job Proving results and measuring effectiveness of advertising. Success story We sold a car from our lobby that is a rotating display from area auto dealers. The member asked specifically for that car. The dealer removed it and the loan was made that same day! Biggest misconception about my job That marketing is so easy that anybody can do it! Hobbies and interests Golf, gardening, walking, reading, Maryland Terps, Ravens, and Orioles. Recent book The Blind Side by Michael Lewis. Life goal not yet attained More travel. Something that always makes me laugh Monty Python. Favorite quote “We have no problems—just challenges.” Good music Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Little Feat, Spirit, Beatles. If I could spend a day with anyone it would be . . . John Feinstein—he writes very good sports books. How I would explain the credit union difference to a potential new member We give it back to members. It's not profit that's divided among private owners or shareholders. It's all members' money. So we give it back to them in the form of better rates, services, and service.
